Lighter, More Powerful
Yamaha Loudspeakers

Yamaha’s DXRmkII speakers deliver more power in a lightweight form factor.

Yamaha’s DXRmkII powered loudspeakers series now offers enhanced performance and reduced weight compared with its predecessor, the DXR series. A joint effort with the professional loudspeaker engineering team at NEXO, the DXRmkII models reach a higher SPL than the previous series thanks to a larger 1.75” voice coil HF compression driver and precise amp tuning. These loudspeakers are designed to deliver improved sound reproduction while retaining the basic utility and versatility of the original DXR series.

State-of-the-art Yamaha digital technology ensures that each of the speakers reliably delivers its powerful SPL with superb clarity and musicality. All models feature proprietary Yamaha FIR-X tuning using linear phase FIR filters for the crossover. This innovative tuning provides accurate and smooth response with greater clarity and imaging than in typical crossovers.

All models also feature D-CONTOUR dynamic multi-band processing for clear, powerful, and consistent sound regardless of how hard they are driven. D-CONTOUR provides more detailed tuning of sound with two settings—FOH/MAIN or MONITOR mode—optimally set to match any particular application. The innovative DSP processing incorporated by Yamaha extends beyond sonic control as well, offering tour-proven protection functions that ensure all the vital components perform at their maximum potential even after extended durations of usage.

Durable, non-resonant ABS enclosures and a portable, lightweight construction allow for seamless adaptability in various environments and applications, from front-of-house sound and floor monitoring to simple amplification and installed environments. For rigged applications, DXRmkII series loudspeakers come equipped with rigging points compatible with standard eyebolts, while optional U-brackets are available for various horizontal and vertical applications. The DXRmkII also features a dual-angle pole mount socket to direct audio output away from reflective surfaces and onto the audience, as well as a three-channel onboard mixer, flexible IN/OUT connectivity, and linking capability, allowing it to comprise a full sound reinforcement system.

The new DXRmkII lineup will begin shipping this summer.

Pignose Unveils Kager
All-Tube Guitar Amp

The versatile Kager all-tube amp.

NEW FROM PIGNOSE, the Kager K50-15 All-Tube Guitar Amp is a hand-wired, vintage-vibe combo amp that runs at 15 or 50 watts at the flick of a switch, making it great for both gigs and rehearsals. Equipped with one 12" Celestion Vintage 30 driver, this cool combo is adorned with blond tolex, cream color grille cloth, and gold-look appointments. It features Ruby tubes and a Ruby reverb tank, three-band EQ, send/return jacks, speaker jacks for 4/8/16 ohm operation, and switchable power.

The K50-15 was designed and perfected by Dennis Kager of New Jersey, a renowned tube amp designer with a long history of modding and creating great production tube amps. In the late ’60s, his shop, Dennis Electronics, modified amps for pro touring artists such as the Peter Frampton, Johnny Winter, Joan Jett, Rick Derringer, Allman Brothers, and Steely Dan bands. A consultant for Mesa Boogie and Ampeg amps, Kager created Sundown amps, designing the first true two-channel guitar amp. He also built Soldano amps for Yamaha and designed tube amps for Pignose, where he befriended Howard Chatt, who now is selling the Kager K50-15 through Pignose Industries.

On the K50-15, his signature amp, Kager designed the circuitry, the hand-wired protocol, the features, the cosmetics, and every last detail down to the fonts on the chassis. He worked closely with Chatt at Pignose USA to get K50-15s hand-wired in China and presented by Pignose Industries. Kager developed many prototypes over the past five years to “get it right,” giving his final quality control blessing shortly before he recently passed away. Chatt and Kager’s son Dennis Jr. are moving ahead with this amazing professional player’s amp.

Kager K50-15 production amps are now ready to ship and priced at $2,495; SRP and MAP $1,850. Dealer and distributor pricing inquiries welcome.

Among the available media are music and video captures of Steinway artists as well as Steinway immortals including Duke Ellington, Glenn Gould, Arthur Rubinstein, and Art Tatum. Each month, the content library available on the Spirio app expands, automatically updated from the Cloud.

Along with access to the ever-expanding Spirio library, the Spirio | r gives pianists the tools to record, play back, edit, save, and search their performances in Steinway’s proprietary high-resolution format. “Steinway’s culture of innovation has truly reached its pinnacle through Spirio | r, which provides artists with the capabilities to perform, record, and perfect their performances in a groundbreaking new way,” stated Steinway & Sons President & CEO Ron Losby. “Never before have artists been able to capture the nuance and soul of their playing so precisely on a Steinway. As the maker of the world’s finest piano, we are proud to introduce this new evolution of our beloved instrument and look forward to the opportunities this technology will bring to professional and amateur pianists alike.”

Toca Mounts For Percussion

Toca has introduced several new percussion accessory mounts.

TOCA HAS UNVEILED a new series of adaptable mounts designed to provide perfect positioning for percussion instruments. Constructed of cold-rolled steel that is both strong and lightweight, these new mounts are designed to eliminate the hassle of fitting instruments into tight setups.

Toca Accessory Mounts are ideal for adding a cowbell, tone block, or other small percussion accessory to any rig. They feature a sturdy frame fitted with adjustable knurled chrome rods to suspend a wide range of instruments. When fastened to a common microphone or percussion stand with tube diameters ranging from 3/8" to 1-1/8", Accessory Mounts can be unfolded to increase the number of available attachments. The 2/4 model (shown) secures either two or four percussion instruments, while the 4/6 version mounts four or six.

Chime & Guiro Mounts are black powder-coated to be discreet under stage lights. These two contoured, heavy-duty mounts clamp their respective instruments firmly while visually disappearing into a busy setup. Attached to common percussion stands with tube diameters ranging from 3/8" to 1-1/8", their robust design will withstand spirited performances while requiring only a minimal amount of set-up space. The Chime Mount attaches to the back of the instrument frame via a single point of contact while the Guiro Mount cradles the gourd shell with an upper ring and lower clamp that are both rubberized to protect the instrument from damage.

The ultra-compact Universal Tambourine/Frame Drum Mount makes it easy to place a frame drum or tambourine within easy reach of a drumstick, mallet, or hand slap. Featuring rubberized retaining pegs that prevent scratches or damage to the instrument, its high-strength right-angle clamp enables precise positioning, and makes minimal contact with the shell to ensure unrestricted resonance. The mount attaches and detaches in a split second and provides a snug 360-degree grip onto any cymbal topper or 3/8" rod for worry-free performance.

Yamaha FG Red Label Acoustic Guitars

Yamaha FG5 Red Label guitar.

YAMAHA’S NEW FG Red Label series acoustic guitars blend the vintage, handcrafted design of iconic early Yamaha instruments with the company’s cutting-edge technological innovation in wood conditioning and true-to-life sound reproduction. These new folk guitars are inspired by the original FG Red Label acoustic guitars of the 1960s, the company’s very first steel-string guitars, which became widely known for their high-end Japanese craftsmanship. The new series retains the retro aesthetic and classic tone of its predecessors while adding a new pickup system and Yamaha’s proprietary wood aging process to create a guitar that sounds like a seasoned, vintage instrument right out of the box.

All models in the FG Red Label line are crafted with solid Sitka spruce tops, mahogany back and sides, and ebony fingerboards. The top is reinforced with scalloped bracing, a specialized latticework to enhance tone and projection. The overall design evokes the look and feel of the original FG Red Label models launched in 1966 under the Nippon Gakki name that preceded the present-day Yamaha brand. Over the years, the models in this original line have come to represent the quintessential Yamaha acoustic guitar.

Selected models in the line are equipped with the Yamaha Atmosfeel pickup and preamp system, a hardware innovation endowing the guitar with a uniquely natural plugged-in sound. Atmosfeel employs a three-way sensor setup, with a piezo sensor to capture sound where the strings meet the bridge, an internal microphone to gather the resonance inside the guitar body, and a sheet sensor to pick up the vibrations of the topboard. These three components work together to produce a multidimensional sound with additional nuance and depth, offering a more complete representation of the guitar’s true sound.

The FG Red Label’s top is treated with Yamaha’s proprietary Acoustic Resonance Enhancement, a patented chemical-free process that uses precise control of temperature, humidity, and pressure to alter the structure of wood at a sub-cellular level, transforming it into the same material as would be found on a guitar that has been played for many years. Benefits include increased resonance, longer bass sustain, and greater midrange and high-frequency responsiveness.

Yamaha FG Red Label guitars will ship in the summer of 2019. MSRPs range from $1,275 to $2,320. All models will ship with a hard bag; the FG5 and FGX5 models will ship with a hardshell case.

BOSS Updates GT-1000
Effects Processor

BOSS GT-1000 Guitar Effects Processor.

In its feature-rich Version 3 update for the GT-1000 Guitar Effects Processor, BOSS offers bass guitar support with three AIRD bass preamp types and a large selection of bass-tuned effects. Free for all GT-1000 owners, the Version 3 update also delivers Manual and Pedalboard modes, offering even more options for real-time effects control. The GT-1000’s AIRD Output Select library has also been expanded with 13 new selections, providing optimized interfacing with a wider range of amplification systems.

The flagship GT-1000 has received universal acclaim for its class-leading sound and feel, extensive effects, versatile real-time control, and travel-ready size. Standout features include a high-powered custom DSP engine, 32-bit AD/DA, 32-bit floating-point processing, and 96 kHz sampling rate throughout, plus the ability to edit patches wirelessly via built-in Bluetooth and a dedicated app. The GT-1000 platform continues to evolve through ongoing firmware development, with each revision adding new features and functionality enhancements requested by GT-1000 users.

BOSS’s powerful GT-10B was a longtime favorite of creative bassists, providing top-flight amps, effects, and DI capabilities in one convenient floorboard. With the new bass-focused features in Version 3, the GT-1000 delivers next-generation bass performance with advanced sound quality, ultra-flexible features, and an even more compact size. Three AIRD bass preamps provide core tone shaping, while eight different bass overdrive/distortion effects are on hand for additional color and gain. There’s also a bass compressor powered by MDP tech, plus chorus, flanger, touch wah, and many other effect types specially tuned for bass.

GT-1000 Version 3 includes new footswitch modes for even more control onstage and in the studio. Manual mode—a popular feature found in previous-generation GT processors—allows the user to set up on/off control of any amp or effect on a secondary layer that can be accessed with a footswitch assignment. The all-new Pedalboard mode takes an even more direct approach for players wanting a traditional stompbox experience, providing a dynamic effects layout that’s outside the normal patch structure and always ready to go when needed.

One of the GT-1000's most powerful benefits is its AIRD Output Select functionality, which gives the user consistent tone with any connected device, whether it’s a regular amp input, amp effects return, p.a. mixer, or recording interface. Version 3 adds 11 types to the large guitar-based AIRD Output Select collection in the GT-1000, plus two types for the new AIRD bass preamps.

The GT-1000 Version 3 update is available as a free download and can be installed by connecting the GT-1000 to a Mac or Windows computer via USB.
