Yamaha Second-Generation
Pro Baritone Saxes

Yamaha’s new YBS-62II and YBS-82 (pictured) bari saxes are expected to begin shipping in September 2020.

YAMAHA’S SECOND-GENERATION YBS-62II Professional Baritone Saxophone improves upon the ergonomics and intonation of the original model, the YBS-62. The new model retains the outstanding quality and playability of its predecessor while inheriting high-end features from the company’s newly released Custom YBS-82 Baritone Saxophone. These include a new ergonomically designed key layout that makes it easier to play longer, faster, and more comfortably, as well as a shorter bell length for improved intonation, especially for challenging notes in the lower register. The YBS-62II (MSRP $13,997) also features the addition of a peg receiver so that an optional peg can be attached. For the first time, a new case design adds wheels for easier transportation.

Yamaha’s new YBS-82 Custom Baritone Saxophone (MSRP $16,323) is the first custom-level baritone model in the company’s venerated saxophone lineup. Like its acclaimed Soprano, Alto, and Tenor Custom Saxophones, the YBS-82 provides exceptional reliability and consistency to professional jazz, classical, and contemporary artists looking for the highest level of craftmanship in a baritone saxophone.

The YBS-82 features handmade neck options with varying tapers and finishes, including silver-plated, unlacquered, and gold lacquer to satisfy a player’s preferences. A shorter bell length improves intonation, particularly when playing challenging notes in the lower register, while a one-piece bell provides rich sound throughout the range of the instrument. A new key layout improves ergonomics and makes it easier to play the instrument comfortably. Yamaha has also added a detachable peg, which supports a good portion of the instrument’s weight.

Danelectro Reissues 59 Divine Guitars

Danelectro 59 Divine guitars.

WITH ITS DOUBLE-cutaway, short-horn body design, the new Danelectro 59 Divine six-string electric guitar pays homage to the now-iconic “Deluxe” model first launched back in 1959. This hot reissue retains many of the original stylish features, plus upgrades including a pair of Vintage ’50s single-coil lipstick pickups with original USA wiring.

As with the originals back in the 1950s, the company’s flagship tone is enhanced with sand-cast and then sand-blasted Alnico 6 magnets housed within thin-wall 80/20 brass/zinc tubes, delivering a warm open low end, searing mids, and even more high-end classic Dano clarity and chime.

With a slick neck and smooth 21-fret rosewood fingerboard, the 59 Divine plays like a dream, and its fully adjustable bridge, precision-cut bone nut, and straight string pull to Gotoh vintage 15:1 machine heads deliver accurate tuning and intonation.

In the new 59 Divine series, Danelectro’s unmistakable art-deco aesthetics are dressed up in a choice of three stunning finishes—Dark Walnut top and back, Flame Maple top and back, or Fresh Cream top and back—each off set with front and back cream body bindings, cream/brown stacked pointer volume/tone controls, and cream headstock.

Inspied by arguably one of the electric guitars that helped start the birth of rock ’n’ roll, Danelectro’s new 59 Divine elevates the originals’ concept and suits a host of styles from surf, country, and rockabilly to blues and rock.

LTD ’87 Series Marks ESP Milestone

Eclipse ’87 (Black), Surveyor ’87, Eclipse ’87 (Turquoise), M-1 Custom ’87, and Mirage Deluxe ’87 LTD models from ESP.

In celebration of its 45th anniversary in 2020, ESP Guitars has introducd the LTD ’87 Series guitars, faithful re-creations of the first set of instruments that gained worldwide recognition for ESP when they were first introduced in the mid-1980s.

“While ESP first got started in 1975 as a small repair shop in Tokyo, it was really toward the mid-’80s when our guitars and basses grabbed the attention of players around the world,” said Matt Masciandaro, president and CEO of the ESP Guitar Company. “The new ’87 Series pays homage to those first instruments that made musicians sit up and realize that ESP was a noteworthy brand.”

With finishes and feature sets that mirror their original counterparts, ’87 Series guitars invoke the vibe of the rock and metal music that dominated the charts in the mid-1980s. The LTD Mirage Deluxe ’87 is being made available in Pearl Pink and Turquoise finishes. This model features a Floyd Rose 1000 bridge and a pickup set that includes a Seymour Duncan Distortion TB-6 (with original style bobbins) and a Seymour Duncan Hot Rail. The LTD M-1 Custom ’87, based on the legendary original ESP M-1 model, is being offered in Black, Dark Metallic Blue, and Candy Apple Red. The M-1 Custom ’87 also features a Floyd Rose bridge and a single Seymour Duncan Distortion TB-6 pickup.

Unlike the current single-cutaway Eclipse shape, the original ESP Eclipse was based on the TE shape, and the new LTD Eclipse ’87 faithfully re-creates that model. Two of the new Eclipse ’87 models offer Floyd Rose bridges, and come in Black and Pearl White finishes, while two non-tremolo versions are being offered in Black and White finishes. The ’87 Series Eclipse models offer a Seymour Duncan JB/’59 pickup set (with original style bobbins). Finally, because ESP basses were also gaining worldwide attention in the mid ’80s, the new LTD Surveyor ’87 is a four-string bass model being offered in Black and Pearl White finishes.

D’Addario Woodwinds Debuts
New Synthetic Reed

D’ADDARIO WOODWINDS has introduced VENN, a new species of reeds that the company predicts will offer significant benefits to woodwind players. Available starting April 2020, VENN combines the stability and longevity of a synthetic reed with the sound and feel of natural cane. To mimic the organic structure of cane, D’Addario reverse-engineered cane, layering different strengths of polymer fibers with resin and organic reed elements to make up the reed blank. This composition is designed to deliver extraordinary durability and performance while sounding and playing like fine cane reeds. VENN reeds will initially be available for Bb clarinet and alto and tenor saxophone.

VENN reeds last far longer than cane reeds, they are exceptionally consistent from reed to reed, and they are less subject to splitting, chipping, and breaking from use. VENN requires no prep, care, or maintenance, and it is resistant to environmental conditions including temperature and humidity.

Chairman of the Board Jim D’Addario commented: “In 2014, I challenged our Woodwinds team to create the first synthetic reed to duplicate the properties and playing characteristics of natural cane. After thousands of hours, we accomplished the task by creating a material matrix of co-polymers, longitudinal fibers, and real cane elements that have the physical and sonic properties of real cane.”

VENN reeds are already garnering rave reviews from some of the world’s leading woodwind artists. “When I first played VENN, I was stunned,” said D’Addario Woodwinds artist Katisse Buckingham. “What I appreciated most was the incredible predictability and consistency. They truly reverse engineered cane and have completely changed the game.”

Korg wavestate Synth

wavestate synthesizer from Korg.

In its new wavestate synthesizer, featuring a dramatically expanded Wave Sequencing engine, Korg delivers a remarkable range of sounds with extensive hands-on control. While it takes its inspiration from Korg’s early-’90s Wavestation, it is far from a nostalgic reissue. Designed from the ground up, it takes cues from sources as diverse as modular synths, groove boxes, and algorithmic composition. Bursting with knobs and controllers, the wavestate invites users to explore all the basics; filter, envelopes, LFOs, and effects at their fingertips with dedicated front-panel controls. A front-panel button, marked by a “dice” icon, generates new sounds via intelligent randomization.

wavestate combines Korg’s proprietary Wavesequncing 2.0, deep modulation capabilities, plenty of polyphony (64 notes), and up to four parts and 14 effects simultaneously—the most its category. Its compact form factor, with 37 full-size keys, transports easily and fits neatly into any stage, studio, or desktop setup. Six GB of PCM delivers more than 700 sounds and 240 performances; plus there are 1,000 Wavesequences to explore and storage for over 10,000 performances.

To help users get the most out of wavestate, eight hardware Mod Knobs provide musicians with instant access to the most effective sound parameters, inviting customization and exploration of the sonic possibilities.

“wavestate’s capabilities and resulting sounds are jaw-dropping,” said James Sajeva, director of music technology for Korg. “Its depth is truly unmatched, yet it’s designed to be incredibly hands-on and instantaneous, allowing everyone to explore its abilities.”

The wavestate was designed by Korg’s R&D department in San Diego, California—the same team that created the original Wavestation, co-created the OASYS and Kronos, and developed fundamental technologies behind many other Korg instruments. The wavestate reflects their unique aesthetic, delivering stunning sound and deep flexibility via cutting-edge technologies.

The wavestate is now available at a price of $799.99.

Washburn Michael Sweet Acoustic

MSJ40SCE Michael Sweet acoustic from Washburn.

Washburn hit this year’s NAMM Show with a new Michael Sweet acoustic guitar (MSJ40SCE) featuring a large jumbo body built to deliver a big, booming, and powerful tone that’s based on the vintage Washburn J40 guitar. “Last year Washburn debuted the Michael Sweet V model guitar to great success, confirming Michael Sweet’s impact and influence on today’s players,” said Washburn Vice President of Sales James Tsaptsinos. “For 2020 we went back to Michael again for his take on a new acoustic guitar that we believe will be every bit as successful as the V was last year.”

The new Michael Sweet acoustic model makes a statement with a solid bearclaw spruce top that adds a touch of the exotic to the instrument. Other features include integrated Barcus Berry active electronics, as well as a deep and rich transparent black finish that lends a perfect accent to the figured woods used to make the guitar.

“It wouldn’t be a true Michael Sweet guitar if it didn’t also come with a little bling,” Tsaptsinos said. “It is well appointed with a nice real abalone purfling to outline its top and sound hole. In every respect, this new guitar lives up to the artist who stands behind it.”

Sweet is best known as the co-founder, writer, lead guitarist, lead singer, and frontman for multi-platinum crossover Christian metal band Stryper. He was also the singer and guitarist for Boston from 2007 to 2011.

NEW FROM On-Stage, the UTC1100 Utility Cart is the company’s most compact cart to date, though it’s extendable and holds up to 330 lbs. per trip, and the new UCA1500 Tray is a versatile attachment that converts the cart into a portable workstation. Boasting a versatile frame designed to accommodate gear of all kinds, the UTC1100 can haul everything from the heaviest p.a. speakers and DJ rigs to awkwardly shaped gear, such as lighting rigs and crates of cables.

The UTC1100’s wheels allow it to travel where other carts cannot. Textured 6" rear wheels offer superior grip over uneven or loose surfaces, while 3", 360-degree rotating casters let users steer their gear with precision. Each caster can be locked, hands-free, to make straight-line transportation easy.
Roadworthy construction includes industrial welds and quality components. The heavy-duty frame also features non-slip materials on key contact points as well as strategically placed eyelets for hooks and straps.

Sold separately, the new UCA1500 Utility Cart Tray provides an extra level of versatility for DJs, AV techs, live sound engineers, etc., adding a sturdy 36" x 17" reinforced tabletop surface to the cart that enables users to transition from “going” to “showing” in a matter of seconds. With slots for cable ties and two portholes for routing audio or power cables, DJs and audio pros will find it ideal for mixers, laptops, lighting controls, monitors, and accessories. Top and side mounting slots provide various height configurations that adapt to the user’s needs. The tray also includes ten cable ties for maintaining a clean and organized setup.

This highly portable mobile interface can be used with iPhone, iPad, and Android devices, as well as Mac and Windows computers—raising the bar in universal compatibility with the inclusion of dedicated ASIO drivers delivering low-latency performance for Windows users.

Like its predecessor, IK’s well-known iRig Pro Duo, the iRig Pro Duo I/O was designed for musicians, podcasters, and other content creators. It can accommodate a variety of input sources including microphones, MIDI controllers, line-level and high-impedance instruments such as guitars, basses, and keyboards, and more. It also offers full MIDI capabilities.

New features include updated mic preamps with increased gain, an included USB-C cable to connect with the latest devices, and refined volume controls with level indicators for more convenient workflow. In addition, a new rubberized finish offers protection from the rigors of the road.

Two analog combo inputs (1/4"/XLR) enable connection and simultaneous recording with any combination of dynamic and condenser microphones and instruments (line level or Hi-Z). These inputs are complemented by Class-A preamps, adjustable gain, and true 48V phantom power. Individual channel input gain controls let users dial in the perfect amount of input signal for their recording.

iRig Pro Duo I/O can also be used as a MIDI interface via MIDI In/Out connectors and included breakout cables. Additional connections include two balanced 1/4" outputs and headphone output.

A direct monitor switch provides latency-free monitoring of direct incoming signals for use with video or streaming apps. Users can also monitor the processed signal returning from their device when recording music or using audio processing apps.

iRig Pro Duo I/O runs on USB bus power or two AA batteries (or optional PSU), and includes Lightning, USB-A, and USB-C cables to work with any device right out of the box.

Although compatible with any app designed for high-quality digital audio input for recording or creation, iRig Pro Duo I/O comes with free access to more than $/€500 of IK software, apps, and in-app material, making it an all-in-one package with everything needed to record, edit, and share music, podcasts, interviews, and more.
