689 "HOLTON, a division of Conn-Selmer, Inc." "P.O. Box 310, Elkhart IN 46515-0310. Tel: (574) 522-1675. Fax: (574) 295-0334. Email: custserv@conn-selmer.com. Web: www.conn-selmer.com. Frank Holton was a professional trombonist with the famous Sousa band and associate of the leading musicians of the late 19th century. He was a business manager and trombone soloist; a theatre musician and entrepreneur. The legacy of Frank Holton continues to this day, over 100 years later, focusing on providing musicians with the finest tools on which to perform their craft.Holton began his company in 1896 in Chicago, after numerous engagements as a trombonist in many leading performing groups. As a former member of Sousa’s great band, and an associate and friend of trombonist Arthur Pryor and cornetist Herbert L. Clarke, Holton enjoyed wide renown. At forty year’s of age, Frank Holton created his own recipe for trombone slide oil. He soon took on the sale of used band instruments. H.A. Vander Cook (who later started the Vander Cook School of Music) stated that, “The present factory is the result of his perseverance and his making ‘one good tone at a time,’ which method he applied to overcome the obstacles as they arose before him.”Holton’s contacts and friendships made in his professional musician days served him well during these years. Many of his friends in the theatre and dance band circuits had made their way to top symphony jobs, bringing their Holton instruments to Boston, New York, Philadelphia and other highly respected orchestras. One interesting note is that the first trumpet player with the Boston Symphony, Vincent Bach, used and endorsed the Holton trumpet at that time.In 1917, Holton had completed tooling for a complete line of saxophones, in order to meet with the saxophone craze that was just beginning. His factory, though, was at capacity and needed to grow. One of his early customers and friend suggested that Holton combine his love of Wisconsin farms with his work and set up a new factory in Elkhorn, Wisconsin. The citizens of Elkhorn built him a factory of over 35,000 square feet and, while bringing in or training a workforce proved difficult, the first profits for the Wisconsin-based company showed themselves in 1920. The organization of school bands and the promise of “a playing band within twelve weeks,” brought Holton good sales results, but this growth in student instrument demand was not a good fit for the higher-priced professional instruments that Holton was producing. The company introduced lower-priced outsourced instruments under such names as Pertin and Beaufort until it could introduce its own “Collegiate” line in the early 1930’s. Mr. Holton retired at age 82 and sold his controlling shares to longtime associate, William Kull. Frank Holton died on April 16, 1942.Kull remained the CEO until his death in 1944, but the Frank Holton Company was essentially run by the sales manager, Elliott Kehl, a long-time Holton employee. Kehl found war work to keep the factory open during a time when all brass was directed to the war effort. Over the next several years, Kehl was allowed to purchase a majority share in the company as he led a program of re-engineering and improving the line of instruments. Kehl also revived work with key artists, including Phillip Farkas, first horn player of the Chicago Symphony. In 1956, the Holton Farkas model French horn was introduced to great acclaim. That same year, new tooling for saxophones brought Holton into the modern saxophone world. In 1962, the decision to sell the Frank Holton Company to the G. Leblanc Corporation was made. G. Leblanc brought its strength in woodwind instruments together with Holton brass expertise, creating a much more formidable competitor in the band instrument industry.Through the remainder of the century, Holton continued to produce student and professional brass instruments. Its work with international star Maynard Ferguson and his “Superbone” continued Frank Holton’s commitment to working with the finest artists. Development with key educators such as Chicago’s Ethel Merker keeps Holton French horn development moving even beyond what Phillip Farkas has envisioned. Efforts to help young people progress included the introduction of a child-size single horn.In 2005, the company introduced the new Holton Collegiate line of low brass instruments. Like its predecessor in the 1930’s, this high-quality, lower-priced instrument line provides the ideal combination of performance and value for school music programs. The second century of Holton continues to be written, however, the purchase of Leblanc and Holton by Steinway Musical Instruments bodes well for the company. Working with key artists, serving amateur musicians, and developing exciting new opportunities were key to Frank Holton’s vision. Now as part of Steinway Musical Instruments and its band and orchestra division, Conn-Selmer, Inc., Holton instruments continue to excite the musical mind and provide today’s musicians with the finest instruments on which to experience the joy of music."

The King tradition of excellence goes back to 1893, when Sunday concerts in the park were plentiful and the blare of trumpets in minstrel bands sent shivers down the spine of anyone within hearing distance. Music was appreciated in America, but to some, it was more than just a walk in the park.As a young man, Henderson N. White loved music and theater. He ran an instrument repair shop in Cleveland, Ohio, and became friends with the musicians in the city. One of the finest musicians was Thomas King, a solo trombonist with the Lyceum Theatre Orchestra. He urged White to design a new trombone and offered to help. The two men collaborated, White providing his mechanical skill, King contributing his experience as an artist. They tried their ideas, tested them over a period of months, and finally produced a trombone with a vastly improved slide action and superb tonal quality. White named it the “King” trombone, after his friend. It was an immediate success in Cleveland and soon became one of the most popular trombones in the country.White followed his trombone success by designing and patenting a new silver cornet, which also won almost instant acceptance. Then came King trumpets, French horns, baritones and double-bell euphoniums. And so the company began. It started because its young founder felt that every fine artist deserves the best possible instrument. The company’s continuing developmental work has been motivated by this same commitment ever since.During the early years, White worked at the benches along with his employees to learn the causes of imperfections in band instruments... his own included. He insisted that every flaw be corrected. He even sponsored a 12-piece band that played at the factory three times a week not only for the enjoyment of his people but also as a continuing test of his instruments. He listened critically, and many improvements resulted from these concerts and discussions with the musicians afterward. This dedication to perfection and craftsmanship built the company steadily and solidly. King instruments were introduced to the public only when they offered superior advantages. H.N. White pioneered the use of Sterling silver in making bells for cornets, trumpets and trombones. This resulted in a richer sound with more overtones and greater carrying power than conventional bells.By the time of Henderson White’s death in 1940, he had designed and developed 28 instruments, including a complete line of low brass instruments which provided the player both musical superiority and long-lasting construction. The business was carried on for the next 25 years under the direction of Mrs. Henderson White. In 1964, 12-1/2 acres of land in Eastlake, Ohio, became the site for a new plant and the reputation of King musical instruments grew, as band directors discovered the educational superiority of King instrument design. When Mrs. White retired in 1965, the company was sold to a group of investors who expressed their sincere intentions to carry on the ideals and philosophies of the White family. The expansion program continued, and it was determined that the company could attain even greater growth through an association with a larger organization. In January of 1966, the company was merged with The Seeburg Corporation, a major manufacturer in the electronic entertainment industry. At the completion of this merger, the name was changed from the H. N. White Company to King Musical Instruments and, for a short period, ownership changed once again. King is currently owned by Conn-Selmer, Inc., a division of Steinway Musical Instruments, Inc.Over the years, many famous professionals have endorsed King instruments. Tommy Dorsey used a King trombone throughout his career. His brother, Jimmy, also played King instruments. Others include “Dizzy” Gillespie, William Bell, Ray Anthony, Vaughn Monroe, Johnny “Scat” Davis, Harry James, Nat Adderley, Kai Winding, Yusef Lateef, Cannonball Adderley and Mel Davis. Today’s best musicians and finest bands insist on the quality and performance of King musical instruments. Today, King legend continues its strong voice in musical performance"

The story of Leblanc’s inception and ultimate growth is one of the most captivating and well known in the music industry-the stuff of which, as the saying goes, legends are made.Since its modest beginnings in America as a two-man shop, Leblanc grew to a position of international prominence under the leadership of its cofounders, Léon Leblanc (1900-2000) and Vito Pascucci (1922-2003). Leblanc instruments continue to be crafted in Kenosha, Wisconsin and La Couture-Boussey, France.Leblanc in America traces its origins to the founding of Ets. D. Noblet of France in 1750, when the great flourishing of instrumental music at the court of Louis XV created a demand for musical instruments of all kinds. More than any other instrument manufacturer, Noblet refined and developed early woodwind manufacturing techniques, securing for the French nation its preeminent reputation for producing the best wind instruments in the world. Based in La Couture-Boussey for two and a half centuries, it is among the oldest continuously operating companies in France. In 1904, having no heirs, the Noblet family passed its holdings to Georges Leblanc, descendant of a long line of distinguished French instrument makers. By the time he acquired Noblet, Georges Leblanc had gained a reputation as one of the finest woodwind makers in France. The workshop at the Leblanc headquarters in Paris became a meeting place of the great woodwind artists of the era. The subsequent growth and success of G. Leblanc Cie. as a manufacturing entity was largely due to the work of Léon Leblanc, who in addition to his reputation as an instrument maker and businessman, was also a gifted clarinetist, holder of the first prize of the Paris Conservatoire, the first and only instrument maker to have held such an honor. As Léon Leblanc once noted, “Musicians of today should not be handicapped by the deficiencies of those before me. Acoustical, mechanical and musical improvements will be made. To this end, I have dedicated my life.” Monsieur Leblanc served as chairman of the American company and président honoraire of the French firm until his death in 2000 at the age of 99.The history of Leblanc in Kenosha, Wisconsin, dates to the last months of World War II and a chance meeting between Léon Leblanc and Vito Pascucci.Born in Kenosha, Vito Pascucci showed a marked interest in music and played cornet in the Kenosha High School band. He became fascinated with the construction and design of musical instruments and learned their repair as a summer apprentice at the Frank Holton Company, and then, while still in high school, augmented his family’s income by operating an instrument-repair shop at his brother’s music store. In 1943, Pascucci was called into the armed forces. His instrument-repair skills were rewarded when he was assigned as a trumpeter and repairman to Army Field Bands, then to the Army Air Corps Band, led by Glenn Miller. He began with the Miller band in New Haven, Connecticut, and then traveled with them to Europe. Stationed in England, Pascucci and Miller formed plans to set up a chain of music stores after the war.Miller’s untimely death put an end to those plans, but when the band was sent to newly liberated France, Vito paid a visit to G. Leblanc Cie., and his guide that day was Léon Leblanc. After service discharge in 1946, Pascucci returned to Kenosha, where Mr. Leblanc asked him to establish a foothold for the French company in America.A shop for the purpose of disassembling, climatizing and reassembling wood instruments was set up as part of the new firm. After shipment to America by sea (and later by air), the wood was allowed to stabilize under the new atmospheric conditions, and the instruments were restored to original factory specifications, reassembled, adjusted and thoroughly tested. In the 1950s, due to an ever-growing school market, demand for Leblanc instruments in the United States was far greater than the French concern could meet, so Leblanc began producing plastic-bodied clarinets in Kenosha. The Vito line of musical instruments was thus born, thrusting Leblanc to the forefront of the student clarinet market. In 1951, construction of Leblanc’s Kenosha factory was completed, a plant that to this day provides a model for the industry in its modern equipment, efficient operation and attractive appearance. Ever-increasing production called for the factory’s subsequent expansion in 1953, 1960 and 1966 and 1999.In April 1989, Leblanc USA acquired majority interest in the esteemed French firm and assumed responsibility for its management. In 2004, Leblanc was acquired by Conn-Selmer, Inc. a division of Steinway Musical Instruments (NYSE:LVB). Today, Leblanc clarinets are achieving even greater prominence through its new Leblanc by Backun professional instruments. The association of Leblanc and famed instrument designer, Morrie Backun has provided for a superior combination of acoustical and mechanical expertise rarely found in the music industry. Artist like Ricardo Morales, Eddie Daniels, Julian Bliss and host of others continue to perfect their performances with instrument from Leblanc."

The original Martin band instrument plant was established in Chicago prior to 1871 and could have become America’s oldest band instrument company, had it not been for one of the many fires that claimed much of the city at that time. In 1876, after a fire completely wiped out Henry Martin’s business, it is said that he walked the entire distance to Elkhart, Indiana, where he joined an instrument company just being formed by C.G. Conn as its sixth employee. Henry retired from C.G. Conn in 1902 and died in 1920. However, in 1907, Henry Martin’s five sons, who had learned the art of building instruments from their father, established the new Martin Band Instrument Company. Martin instruments were truly a cottage industry, with each brother building instruments in their homes during the early years. It wasn’t until 1910 when the Martin factory opened its doors in Elkhart. Through the years, Martin built a reputation for outstanding quality wherever its instruments were sold. In 1928 Martin acquired The Indiana Band Instrument Company, giving Martin a lower priced student line for this growing market. One of the most famous Martin instruments, the Martin Committee trumpet, earned its name by being designed by a committee of trumpet experts in the 1930’s. It dominated the jazz trumpet market from the late 1940s. Committee trumpets were played by Miles Davis throughout his career, as well as Chet Baker, Dizzy Gillespie, Maynard Ferguson, and Al Hirt. In 1962 Martin was acquired by Richards Music Corporation. RMC was absorbed by Wurlitzer Corporation in 1965. Production at the Elkhart plant ceased in 1968. The brand was later sold to the G. Leblanc company and manufacturing moved to Kenosha, Wisconsin in 1971. It was during this time that renowned trombonist Urbie Green worked with Leblanc engineers to create the Martin Urbie Green trombone. With the sale of Leblanc to Conn-Selmer, Inc. in 2004, Martin instruments have joined the growing number of legendary brands under the Conn-Selmer banner. Martin now enters its second century with a renewed commitment to provide the highest level of professional craftsmanship to these classic instruments."

Clair Omar Musser (b. 10/14/01 d. 11/7/98) was in 5th grade Lincoln School, (PA) with his violin for his Christmas program. A prominent school director, Mr. Ammon Bucher had just purchased an Edison phonograph and loaned the instrument to the program. His (five) “cylinder recordings” featured violin selections, Enrico Caruso, Christmas music and his last number was announced as “The United States Marine Band” featuring Thomas Mills playing “Four Little Black Berries” (solo) on the Xylophone. Young Musser was awestruck, as the audience requested that it be repeated.Musser switched instruments and studied with several prominent xylophone and marimba teachers at the time, including Philip Rosenweig, and had toured as a virtuoso in the United States, Canada and Europe. In 1930, Musser soloed with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Frederick Stock. It was through this affair that Musser succeeded in arranging for a 100 piece Marimba Symphony Orchestra to perform at the Century of Progress Exposition in Chicago. Musser trained the entire orchestra, arranged the music and conducted the concert. For the next thirty years, Musser organized a large number of “marimba symphony orchestras” which toured the United States and Europe. From 1942 to 1952, Musser taught at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. His innovative designs for a variety of mallet keyboard instruments found their way into production and distribution through his own company, which he started in 1948. The next decade saw tremendous growth in popularity of Musser mallet instruments as they became known as the standard for tuning and for defining the quintessential sounds for mallet instruments. In 1966, the Musser Marimba Company joined the Ludwig Drum Company, making the combined entity, Ludwig/Musser, a total percussion force. Claire Musser passed away in 1998, leaving a legacy of unique skills that brought the marimba and other keyboard mallet instruments to the forefront of modern percussion.Musser mallet instruments are well-known for their accuracy of pitch and integrity of tone. The results of Musser’s unique tuning process are well-known by percussionists around the world. As mallet instruments grew in importance on the marching field, Musser led the charge in developing a unique Kelon material that allowed the superior Musser tone to be translated to materials impervious to weather.Today, Musser instruments are seen and heard throughout the world being played by leading jazz artists, in professional symphonies and on the outdoor marching field. Known for their high level of tonal excellence, Musser marimbas, vibraphones and xylophones set the musical standard for excellence."

The NEMC Rental Program removes from the dealer the steep capital requirements, high operation costs, extensive service and repair responsibilities, and the complicated, intense legal requirements of offering rental contracts to the public. Under the NEMC program a dealer receives an inventory of new and like-new name-brand instruments complete with accessories, ready for rental. NEMC supplies an inventory based on the size of the dealer’s rental program, and additional inventory is sent throughout the year as the dealer needs it, all at NEMC’s expense. If a new dealer already has rental inventory, NEMC will purchase it from the dealer as it is rented to a customer, thus freeing up cash for the dealer. Each instrument’s rental documents are customized for each affiliate according to the often strict laws and requirements of their respective state or territory. NEMC also works with the dealer to create a custom, competitive, and profitable price schedule for the affiliate’s individual marketplace.NEMC maintains one of the largest staffs of skilled repair technicians dedicated only to rental instrument service. Free hands-on instrument repair training is available to all affiliates in NEMC’s New Jersey repair center with one-on-one private instruction.Motivational mailings to parents and students on behalf of the affiliate, the billing and collecting of rental payments and delinquent accounts, along with the Platinum Plan Plus to increase commission percentage and the Annual Rental Bonus Plan for cash bonuses all add to the rental program of choice for discerning dealers nationwide. “Often imitated, never duplicated.”"
